What can I say about it, but “andale, andale, ariba!!” Yeah baby. The speed of my new 32GB 3GS iPhone is so amazing. You have no idea how amazingly fast the speed is. Let’s start by comparing the speed of 2G / 3G.

We’ll take the old Neocell for example. Being jailbroken with OS 3.0, I couldn’t run Pandora in the background for very long without it crashing (closing in the background from running out of memory). And we’re talking about doing simple things, like typing in the WordPress app. In short, running a program in the background such as Pandora would crash in about two minutes or less… and if it didn’t crash, it’d make the system so sluggish while running something in the background it wasn’t even worth it.

Now we compare the same settings and systems for the Neocell 3GS. I’ve been running Pandora in the background 70% of the time I use the Neocell (including driving places) and Pandora hasn’t crashed once. Not one single time. I’ve even ran it in the backgound of some intensive applications. I’ve been running Pandora in the background while the Tomtom car navigation app runs with zero lag, as well as in the background to some video games, such as Geodefense. You heard me right… not once crash or even lag since I got the Neocell 3GS.

I can’t believe the speed this baby’s got. It’s amazing. Now, for those of you who have a 3GS and are jailbroken, don’t be temped to go out and load it up with all this jailbroken garbage like Winterboard of SBSettings (you heard me right). Having a 3GS is like upgrading from a truck to a sports car. Don’t go loading up that sports car with a trailer full of wood. That sports car will still be faster hauling wood than your truck was, but it’ll no longer be as fast as a sports car. Don’t go loading up your 3GS with jailbroken garbage, or you will make it no faster (even slower) than a non-jailbroken 2G or 3G iPhone.

Peace, J

Amazing app. Truly… amazing. But the little ‘freaker was slowin’ down the system… and started slowly makin’ typin’ unbearable. I mean, what was I to do?? I’d deal with people who had iPhones with OS 3.0. What am I to do with spelling on the Neocell but have it be sluggish? Brag to non-jailbroken OS 3.0 iPhone users:

“Well I’m customized, I actually got spellin’ on my iPhone.”

“For real? Oh my god. Girl, come see this, this boy’s got spelling on his iPhone… Show us.”

“‘Ight, check it out… wait… the Notepad app’s not, wait… gotta’ wait for the, um… keyboard will take just a sec… it’s… ‘freak, come on… do something… it’s really not that slow when, oh, ok, it’s ready.” *tap tap tap* “See? Spelling.”

“Wow, that’s awesome… but, um, why is everything so slow?”

Yeah, um… **** that. And here’s the worst part… besides Adblock, it’s the only jailbroken app I have running with my system. I’m not even using Backgrounder. That’s pure sluggishness, Inspell, all by itself. And it’s not Adblock doin’ it because didn’t install Adblock until after Inspell started making the system sluggish. And no, I didn’t have nothin’ funky added into Inspell, just the normal app and everything that came with it (just the English dictionary, no other languages).

So how bad was the sluggishness? Bad… You could feel it just swiping through springboard pages (springboard is the icon desktop thing). Once I uninstalled it and anything else that was also installed with it the speed came right back after a reboot. It absolutely was Inspell. That’s sad man… that’s real sad.

The Neocell’s speed is almost the exact same as non-jailbroken OS 3.0 iPhones (you really can’t tell the difference), so ****’s runnin’ top notch now, but… I miss Inspell and Backgrounder.

Peace, J

Turns out the system did slow down just a little with no jailbroken apps installed.

I guess that’s just part of the way the OS is designed. Once you install it and jailbreak it fresh, it runs real fast and snappy… but then slows down some after time. Once it’s been used some.

So I reinstalled Inspell, Adblock and next I’ll be installing Backgrounder back on. I haven’t noticed any speed change with Adblock or Inspell installed, which is good. And let me tell ya, I was missin’ Inspell like a mother…

I’m talkin’ speed compared to how the Neocell was when it was running good with the jailbroken apps working.

Right now I’ve got nothing installed… and the speed’s much faster than when I had my jailbroken apps installed. So that either means one of two things… either the quick speed is from having the OS reinstalled and it’ll slow down some after I’ve used it some more, or one of three jailbroken apps are slowing the system down. If it is that, the only apps it could be would be BossPrefs, Inspell and Backgrounder.

There could be one other thing… Winterboard. If you read my posts from before, I had Winterboard installed. It made **** so slow and I removed it. But maybe that messed up crap and helped to make things slow.

So I’m gonna’ run a little experiment… I’m not gonna’ install Backgrounder or Inspell to see if performance stays snappy. And in fact, since BossPrefs doesn’t work for wifi, I’m not gonna’ install it at all.

Here’s the reason speed’s so important to me. Speed is “ok” while in apps, but for switching between apps… that’s where speed’s the biggest issue. Someone comes up and says “Where’s the location…” of something. No prob, right? It can be if **** takes a long time. You’ve got the address in Notes. Gotta’ open it up, select the note… then, click the link to open the location up in Maps, then let’s say you wanna’ add the location of it to your contacts. Well if your gonna’ get delay and sluggishness between each action you make, it really becomes frustrating and embarasing. “Opps… wait… Wait…”

So I’m runnin’ the Neocell naked for a while to see how things go before I install Backgrounder or Inspell. Then I’ll let ya all know what kinda’ results I found.

Peace, J

So one thing I’ve noticed is how fast T-mobile’s Edge (2G) Internet is. I mean long before I had mobile internet, I heard stories about it, how it was slow and how even 3G wasn’t that fast… at least all of these stories were for AT&T, and if any of them were talking about T-mobile, it was from like 2007 when iPhones first came out.

But I’ve noticed that my T-mobile 2G Edge seems to act, well… almost as if I had 3G. It’s very fast. In fact, I’ve noticed simple pages like news.google.com load up about the same speed as iPhones on AT&T’s 3G.

I started thinking about this… why would T-mobile give such good speed to their 2G network? All of their smart phones access their 3G network… and I’ve heard so many complaints of it’s 3G speed compared to AT&T’s 3G speed. I know T-mobile’s 2G’s network used so be dirt slow, but now they’ve put so much quality in it. Why bother when most complain about T-mobile’s 3G? After all, the only ones on T-mobile that even use 2G to the full extent are… iPhone users, that’s it!

That’s why T-mobile’s Edge is so fast and reliable now. It’s because of all the iPhone users. Any model iPhone unlocked and running on T-mobile are only able to access their 2G network. Makes perfect sense. They have virtually no new phones that use the 2G network, so T-mobile boosting it’s 2G network makes it’s iPhone users happy. After all, if people bring their iPhones over to T-mobile and are then let down by sluggish 2G speeds, they’ll jump back to AT&T.

Keeping T-mobile’s Edge boosted helps them steal AT&T iPhone customers, and because they’re paying for the 3G network speeds anyways, but can only access 2G… so it’s only in their best interest.

Now, I can’t speak for all areas… but in the Tampa Bay area, T-mobile’s Edge is nice ‘n’ fast. I took some speed results from the Neocell to show what I mean…

Peace, J

I’ve already mentioned before that, because SBSettings has to run in the background along with your system, it slows everything you do a little bit (or a lot, depending on how demanding you are for performance). Most of you should have Backgrounder installed if your jailbroken, and Backgrounder is a program that runs in the background constantly… and running apps in the background will crash if you don’t have enough memory, so you want to avoid anything that runs with the system, such as SBSettings.

The recommendation I have is to install OS 3.0 (so you don’t need to use Clippy for copy and pasting) and have Backgrounder be the only program that runs in the background with the system. Do not install SBSettings, instead, use BossPrefs, it doesn’t run in the background but provides the same features you’d want in SBSettings. (Although, for some people like me, BossPrefs doesn’t work fully on OS 3.0 and is useless broken.)

But the point of this is to provide some tips on how to keep your system running not so slow with SBSettings installed. After all, if BossPrefs isn’t working, then SBSettings may be important to use for some people. (I won’t use it on the Neocell though, even if BossPrefs doesn’t work.)

So, what can you so to keep SBSettings running fast? First, install OS 3.0 (jailbroken, of course). OS 3.0 really helps free up resources and keep apps and the system running faster.

Next, keep as much **** from runnin’ with the system as possible. So what jailbroken apps run in the background that can slow down your system? The number one that seems to cause the most sluggishness is Winterboard. Wow, that ***** can slow your **** down faster than paparazzi on Paris Hilton after a DUI conviction.

Another thing that not only runs in the background, but isn’t needed, is SSH. Don’t install that crap. You can use iPhoneBrowser if you wanna’ transfer files to and from your computer to your iPhone. That, and that SSH runs in the background. Keep that **** off your iPhone is my (strong) advice.

Next it’s a no brainer, but Clippy. You’ve got no reason to use Clippy with OS 3.0. Clippy runs in the bakground.

There are other (mostly crappy) jailbroken apps that run in the background, and I’m not gonna’ go through each and every one of’em… but know that any apps that use “mobile subtract”… well that’s just a nerdy ‘freakin’ term for “runs with your system in the background”. Avoid that crap at all costs. (A reminder, BossPrefs doesn’t run in the background, it’s one of the good guys in terms of sytem performance.)

The next on the chopping block is Backgrounder… yes, not running Backgrounder will make your system and SBSettings run a little faster, but Backgrounder should be the last thing to be removed if you had to remove it for SBSettings. I honestly couldn’t tell the difference having Backgrounder running or not it runs that light.

So, those are about the only tips I can give oh how not’ta have a performance hit with SBSettings. SBSettings isn’t a huge performance hog, but my best reccomendation is to uninstall SBSettings, and any other “mobile subtract” crap and have Backgrounder be the only thing allowed to run with your system.

Peace, J

No, OS 3.0 isn’t any faster than our current OS 2.2 Or whatever. It’s morely I’m amazed at the speed of a none-customized OS.

I mean feel me, I know my jailbroken OS isn’t slow, I know… but look at what I have… I have some custom things workin’ in my OS that the standard jailbroken OS don’t got. Unlike most of my jailbroken brethren, I keep my **** lean ‘n’ mean. The only things I got runnin’ in with my jailbroken OS would be Clippy, SBSettings and… um… Adblock, Backgrounder and MakeItMine. Those are really the only system tweaks I’ve got if I remember right. But the only ones that actually run in the background with the system are Backgrounder, Clippy and SBSettings. Those are the only ones that would slow my system down some.

But when I watch the iPhone 3.0 demo, I can’t help but notice the speed difference. Like with Notes. ****, it takes me so long to edit a note or to create a new one. And here this dude is, accessin’ it like it ain’t nothin’. And the speed of applications opening and closing, ‘freak. I mean we are talkin’ les than a second difference, but still… that makes a big difference.

Well I’ve come to the conclusion that the our speed for jailbroken OS 3.0 will be faster. If you remember me talkin’ about Clippy, we won’t need Clippy at all because OS 3.0 will have copy and paste. So without Clippy running, hopefully the speed of our OS’s will be faster. By how much? Maybe not much.

But I’m thinkin’… what would the speed be like if I uninstalled SBSettings and went back to regular BossMods or whatever it was called. BossMods sucks, but it’s an application you open and not something that runs in the background. I wonder if that’ll give enough of a speed boost, and will it be worth it? Because I can’t get rid of it beloved Clippy or Backgrounder, SBSettings is the only one I can afford to let go.

I’ll see about tryin’ it and gettin’ back to ya all.

Peace, J

Update: So in Cydia, I noticed I still had a “Skrew” or something file installed that was used for the VWallpaper program. I remember waiting to uninstall it because it had some custom video in there. I decided to remove it and that seemed to have been causin’ some of my speed issues.

I’m gonna’ keep SBSettings installed and see if my speed issues go way.
