Yo I am one depressed and frustrated iPhone owner, let me tell ya… It looks like my iPhone 2G, that I use with T-mobile, is now locked and permanently un-jailbreakable. But let’s start from the beginning…

It all started when I download a free app from the App Store. It said it was “compatible with OS 3.1.2 and up”. I was still using OS 3.0, ‘cuz… come on, there’s really nothing gained from upgrading to 3.1.2 and each time you jailbreak, you run the risk of **** goin’ wrong and who knows what. But when I downloaded this free app, low and behold, the crappy little thing wouldn’t start. I realized then, that it was time to upgrade to OS 3.1.2… I should say, find a way to jailbreak to it.

So I downloaded Geohot’s Blackra1n tool, since it’s the “easiest jailbreak in history” or some crap that he says. It is easy… except for the fact it didn’t do ****. But I figured it wasn’t really the program’s fault, because most attempts to jailbreak don’t go right at first for the Neocell. Seems to always be the case, so I always try over and over again whenever I jailbreak ‘cuz eventuality it’ll work. But no go this time…

I checked online for some trouble shooting, and most people who said they had problems said to upgrade directly to OS 3.1.2 from iTunes (who I DO NOT recommend) and then jailbreak. I did that and well, **** kinda’ went downhill from there.

Once iTunes went through the long process of updating to iTunes 3.1.2, I then lost the ability to jailbreak at all.

Yep… now the Neocell is permanently unjailbreakable. Now, I can’t jailbreak… at all. Tried multiple ways to jailbreak, tried restoring through iTunes… all the same thing. There still could be a way to upload a jailbroken “image” through iTunes manually, but that’s only with an activated AT&T SIM and crap. I’m hoping that I can find some way to still jailbreak.

But man, this sucks. It looks like I may have to get an iPhone 3GS sooner than I thought… and wouldn’t you know, I’d end up getting one of the 3GS’s that you can’t jailbreak. Man this sucks…

Peace, J

You guys hear about the text message security hole found in iPhones? If ya haven’t, in a nutshell, one person found a way to send SMS control (text) messages to iPhones that can either make them not respond for a short time, or take limited control of them. Don’t worry… it ain’t all that.

Basically, someone would have to rediscover this hole in iPhones (something unlikely for anyone to do), then know the phone number of someone who has an iPhone… then send them all these text messages… and for what, to bug someone who’s got an iPhone? Man, I ain’t worried about it myself… and not just because i can’t even receive text messages, but the odds of someone discovering this bug again, and then hitting you with it, the odds are about as good as you winnin’ the lottory.

But, there is a fit for it… Apple released a patch, OS 3.0.1, that plugs up the hole. And, here’s the best part… people who are jailbroken, like me (via Redsn0w), are able to upgrade to the OS 3.0.1 and then jailbreak with Redsn0w (using the same Redsn0w files). Basically, you’ll need to reinstall your OS and then rejailbreak.

But I ain’t doin’ it… ya know? I mean, this isn’t something you need to go out and do. I’m waiting on patches that fix things that effect things we actually do or use. You can if you want, but I’m not updating…

Peace, J

The Neocell’ back. (Baby, did I miss ya or what…) So I’ve got a jailbroken version of OS 3.0 running (via Redsn0w). Mostly everythin’s good… I’ve got Cydia installed and it seems to be running fine. I’ve tried to install BossPrefs, considering Bigboss said it worked for OS 3.0… but it doesn’t seem to work. It’s ok though, no biggie.

Adblock also isn’t working… sorta’ a big thing, considering I paid for it. But I’m sure it’ll be fixed soon.

As far as OS 3.0, it’s absoultely great. The best thing is the increased speed. The system is so responsive… I mean, it’s like getting more RAM installed (or like getting a new phone). I’m lovin’ it.

Copy and paste is pretty bad *** too. It’s so nice havin’ Clippy uninstalled. No more weird crap where Clippy would pop up when it wasn’t suposed to. And the freed up resources can only help OS 3.0 stay as fast.

I also love how you can add multiple photos to emails. God I love that feature.

There’s even more features I haven’t even gotten to… point is, I’m really lovin’ the new OS.

Peace, J

“Redsn0w, honey, I still love ya… Please, take me back. I didn’t mean those things I said about you… Your my one ‘n’ only…”

Thank God. And I mean it, thank God… just some random who-knows-what caused Redsn0w to work. Today, early this morning and late tonight, I’ve spend about four hours total trying to jailbreak the Neocell… Of all people, why’s it gotta’ take ME so long?

So what fixed it… or, un-freaked it up? Man, I can’t tell ya. I’m gonna’ say… magic. For real… I downloaded a new IPSW, new boot loaders, a new Redsn0w, changed USB ports… you name it, the works. Same result. But I keep trying and for some reason it started getting past the “reboot” stage. Redsn0w had a Windows error and quit after loading into the RAM, but I ran it again and this time… it went all the way through.

Speaking of which… it looks like the Neocell’s waiting for me. I have no idea what’s in her or what works, so I’m gonna’ find out and post up later.

Peace, J

Ugg… I ******’ swear man… I gotta’ sexy *** 24k gold plated iPhone (the Neocell), upgraded to 3.0… that’s just starin’ at me… a useless iPhone, begging for an AT&T SIM card. Yep, you guessed it, Redsn0w is failing to jailbreak the Neocell. ****, it ain’t even the Neocell right now… it’s just a sexy lookin’ LOCKED iPhone.

I installed OS 3.0 and went through the process of jailbreaking the Neocell with Redsn0w, but every single time it failed. The Neocell just gets suck at the “Wait for reboot…” stage. I’ve tried manually rebooting it while it’s docked… nothing. Undocking and redocking… nothing. Canceling out Redsn0w and rerunning it without touching the Neocell… nothing. It just gets suck at white screen, never reboots… and any attempt to reboot simply makes it boot up normal.

Three… hours… I messed with it… Three… HOURS… God, I can’t believe this is happening. Haha, it’s so funny that comments from people having issues jailbreaking, people act like that person must have done something wrong and that the jailbreak process is “flawless”. Flawless my ***… this is me we’re talking about, I’ve “hacked” (if you wanna’ call it that) into the Neocell to get it to do things unique just to the Neocell… so I know what the freak to do, and if someone like me is having problems, then it’s not a flawless thing and if people are having problems, it’s not because they’re “lol n00bs” or whatever kinda’ gay terms people on the net use.

*sigh* I’m redownloading the IPSW file to see if that’ll change the process… and just try experimenting some more to see what can be done. It’s almost 1 in the morn, just got home and now I get to spend hours trying to fix the Neocell. Yay…

**** this…

Peace, J

Today the Dev-team has released something called “Redsn0w“, and they say it’s just like QuickPwn, and, most important, there are versions for both Windows and Macs. For all my 2G brethren out there on T-mobile, this is what we’ve been waiting for. It’s a jailbreak and carrier unlock for OS 3.0. This allows us to install OS 3.0 on our iPhones, allow us to run jailbroken apps and unlocked our iPhones to work on T-mobile. Without an unlock, we can’t make or receive calls, but also… we can’t even use our phones because we’ll be locked out with the message “Please insert SIM card”. Redsn0w apparently takes care of all of this.

So what’s needed? Well, first, back your *** up… Once your backed up, through iTunes and / or manually backed up, install the latest version of iTunes. Then, connect your iPhone. If you don’t automatically get the prompt to upgrade to OS 3.0, then click on your iPhone in iTunes and click the “Update” button. Then you let iTunes go through the process of downloading the update, then it’ll install. Once it installs, you then run Redsn0w and follow whatever directions it tells you.

Right now I’m typing this from the Neocomp, I got iTunes downloading the update on the other screen and I’m waiting to see if everything goes smoothly. If everything goes right, my next post will be from the Neocell on OS 3.0…

Peace, J

Update:

They don’t tell you this, but don’t allow iTunes to automatically download the update for OS 3.0. Tell iTunes to save the file for you, but not to install it. Then, copy the file somewhere else to your computer before letting iTunes work with the file. If you upgrade automatically, like I did (didn’t see the option to download and install later), iTunes will download the “IPSW” file, install it to your iPhone, then delete the file. Redsn0w then asks for the IPSW file… which now doesn’t exist. You’ll have to download the file… again… like I’m having to do.

You know, I thought about this before, but figured since the Dev-team simply said “To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device”, that you simply had to just let iTunes do it’s thing. …Yeah…

If you need to find the file, and you have a 2G iPhone, this is what you need to search for… “iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore”.

So ‘ight, time’ta back up files to prepare for a Redsn0w jailbreak. In case iTunes doesn’t backup some of the files it’s meant to, use iBrickr to backup these files…

Note that iTunes will not backup your notes for a fact (until OS 3.0), so you might as well back all the rest of these things yoursel.
