I had some issues from jailbreaking from previous versions brought on from restoring from iTunes backups and other complicatedness. But I did a complete reset of all data and content and, instead of restoring to a backup from iTunes (which would have also brought back bugs from the previous backup), I manually transfered content over. I started from scratch.

Because of that, jailbroken OS 3.1.2 works better than ever. In fact, I now have full working push notifications. And get this, I didn't even have to apply some "push notification fix" to it or nothin'. It just works. For the first time ever, I've got working push notifications.

So then I thought to myself... when a jailbreak is released for OS 3.1.3, why upgrade? I mean, the update offers virtually nothing of value. The only thing closest would be better battery level accuracy monitoring for 3GS's. Ooo, big deal... Why bother possibly messing up everything that's right with OS 3.1.2 to upgrade to an OS that'll give me no benifit at all?

Na, screw that. For the first time since getting the Neocell 3GS, everything's working perfect. I'm not freakin' that up for some stupid bug fixes... bug fixes that don't even affect me. Screw OS 3.1.3.

So what about you? Well there are a group of people who are experiencing issues getting tethering to work. If your not jailbroken but have issues getting tethering to work, then go ahead and upgrade to OS 3.1.3 and hope that it fixes tethering for you. If your jailbroken and can't get tethering to work, wait until a jailbreak is released for OS 3.1.3 and then upgrade and hope that fixes tethering for ya.

A word of caution though... we don't know yet if this update actually blocks tethering profiles from being installed at all. So my real advice is to wait out upgrading for a good, long time, until you start seeing people like me confirm whether or not tethering works for OS 3.1.3.

But I won't be upgrading at all, and my personal advice to you... unless there's something wrong with your OS 3.1.2, don't bother updating.

Peace, JbB

Open Safari

Visit either http://help.benm.at/tethering.php or http://www.iphone-notes.de/mobileconfig/

Select your country

Select your service provider

Tap Install to install the new profile

Select Install Now to install and download the new profile

Now go into your iPhone Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering (look, internet tethering setting, yeah baby)

Turn Internet Tethering On

When it talks that junk about bluetooth, just tell it USB Only if your connecting your iPhone via cable.

Now that tethering is turned on, just connect your iPhone to your computer and your set (yeah baby)

There’s one last thing to do (something that other web sites seem to leave OUT)… Your iPhone may / will act screwy, so go to Settings -> General -> Reset ->Reset Network Settings. After the short reset, iPhone should be able to be used for MMS, Voicemail and Internet tethering.

And there you have it. Nice ‘n’ easy like Georgia Weezy, am I right?

Update: Tethering does in fact work for OS 3.1.2 jailbroken or unjailbroken, and there’s the proof.

We planned on playing some new games on my new Xbox 360, kinda’ spend a “guys day” in just doin’ nothin’ but playin’ some co-op games together (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Gears of War 2). We had to go out and get a second controller and a memory card, know you, run here and there.

Well I had the Neocell 3GS’s bluetooth on, and it was connected (via bluetooth) to my Tomtom 910 in my Lexus. We also were charging it and playing Pandora through the stereo of the Lexus. I received a call from my mother (routed through the GPS’s speaker phone system), just callin’ to say hey, when the call dropped. No big deal, it happens. I called her back, but the call dropped again a minute later. That’s usual for Tampa, at least in my apartment, but it’s unusual for Bradenton. I tried returning the call, but the GPS said “dialing failure”. Checked the iPhone and it said I had no signal, even though Pandora was still streaming music. Very odd. Signal wouldn’t come back, and I knew for a fact the area we were driving had full coverage for AT&T. And Pandora was still streaming (although my bud explained that Pandora buffers ahead of time, so even if you have no internet connection, it will still play).

You know what that means, right? Time for a reboot. So I rebooted and then put the Neocell into my pocket, since we arrived at one of the places we needed to shop at. We do our thing, and by the time we get back to the Lexus, like 30 minutes later, I take out the Neocell and I find that it’s still stuck booting. 30 minutes booting… Wow. I restart again to restart the boot. Still don’t boot. This goes on for another hour. Crap, what’s goin’ on? So, I tried putting the Neocell into “DFU” mode, knowing that I’m not connected to a computer… and still nothing. I figured it might shake it out of the issues it’s having. But nope… The Neocell just ran itself outta’ power after a few hours from constant, endless booting.

So I was down in Bradenton for the weekend without the Neocell. Now it wasn’t the end of the world, considering I was spending most of my time indoors, so it didn’t ruin any plans, which is good. It would have been much worst if this had happened while working with a client or driving somewhere with important information stored on the Neocell.

What I’m doing right now is charging the Neocell (from a dead state, where it shows the battery meter while not actually booted). Once it’s charged, it’ll automatically try to boot, which it’ll get stuck. But I’m then going to enter DFU mode and then try to restore. I’m sure everything will go fine, but if it don’t, you’ll be hearin’ about it.

Peace, J

Best of all, you can install it all from Safari without anything extra.

In Safari, go to http://m.peacefulinsanity.com/Tether.mobileconfig.

And that’s it. You now got internet tethering. And yes, I’ve tried it on both the Neocell 3GS and my girl’s iPhone 3G and it works on both. Pretty bad ***, huh?

But let’s start from the beginning…

It all started when I download a free app from the App Store. It said it was “compatible with OS 3.1.2 and up”. I was still using OS 3.0, ‘cuz… come on, there’s really nothing gained from upgrading to 3.1.2 and each time you jailbreak, you run the risk of **** goin’ wrong and who knows what. But when I downloaded this free app, low and behold, the crappy little thing wouldn’t start. I realized then, that it was time to upgrade to OS 3.1.2… I should say, find a way to jailbreak to it.

So I downloaded Geohot’s Blackra1n tool, since it’s the “easiest jailbreak in history” or some crap that he says. It is easy… except for the fact it didn’t do ****. But I figured it wasn’t really the program’s fault, because most attempts to jailbreak don’t go right at first for the Neocell. Seems to always be the case, so I always try over and over again whenever I jailbreak ‘cuz eventuality it’ll work. But no go this time…

I checked online for some trouble shooting, and most people who said they had problems said to upgrade directly to OS 3.1.2 from iTunes (who I DO NOT recommend) and then jailbreak. I did that and well, **** kinda’ went downhill from there.

Once iTunes went through the long process of updating to iTunes 3.1.2, I then lost the ability to jailbreak at all.

Yep… now the Neocell is permanently unjailbreakable. Now, I can’t jailbreak… at all. Tried multiple ways to jailbreak, tried restoring through iTunes… all the same thing. There still could be a way to upload a jailbroken “image” through iTunes manually, but that’s only with an activated AT&T SIM and crap. I’m hoping that I can find some way to still jailbreak.

But man, this sucks. It looks like I may have to get an iPhone 3GS sooner than I thought… and wouldn’t you know, I’d end up getting one of the 3GS’s that you can’t jailbreak. Man this sucks…

Peace, J
