Redsn0w? ‘Ight, Let’s Do This…

June20

Today the Dev-team has released something called “Redsn0w“, and they say it’s just like QuickPwn, and, most important, there are versions for both Windows and Macs. For all my 2G brethren out there on T-mobile, this is what we’ve been waiting for. It’s a jailbreak and carrier unlock for OS 3.0. This allows us to install OS 3.0 on our iPhones, allow us to run jailbroken apps and unlocked our iPhones to work on T-mobile. Without an unlock, we can’t make or receive calls, but also… we can’t even use our phones because we’ll be locked out with the message “Please insert SIM card”. Redsn0w apparently takes care of all of this.

So what’s needed? Well, first, back your *** up… Once your backed up, through iTunes and / or manually backed up, install the latest version of iTunes. Then, connect your iPhone. If you don’t automatically get the prompt to upgrade to OS 3.0, then click on your iPhone in iTunes and click the “Update” button. Then you let iTunes go through the process of downloading the update, then it’ll install. Once it installs, you then run Redsn0w and follow whatever directions it tells you.

Right now I’m typing this from the Neocomp, I got iTunes downloading the update on the other screen and I’m waiting to see if everything goes smoothly. If everything goes right, my next post will be from the Neocell on OS 3.0…

Peace, J

Update:

They don’t tell you this, but don’t allow iTunes to automatically download the update for OS 3.0. Tell iTunes to save the file for you, but not to install it. Then, copy the file somewhere else to your computer before letting iTunes work with the file. If you upgrade automatically, like I did (didn’t see the option to download and install later), iTunes will download the “IPSW” file, install it to your iPhone, then delete the file. Redsn0w then asks for the IPSW file… which now doesn’t exist. You’ll have to download the file… again… like I’m having to do.

You know, I thought about this before, but figured since the Dev-team simply said “To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device”, that you simply had to just let iTunes do it’s thing. …Yeah…

If you need to find the file, and you have a 2G iPhone, this is what you need to search for… “iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore”.

Peace, J

QuickPwn Jailbreak Not Ready Yet

June19

Yep… the iPhone 3G S is out… and the Dev-team did promise us a jailbreak today… and we got one. Just… not the one everyone uses. It’s the PwnageTool, the one that’s only for Macs. The one everyone uses is QuickPwn, the jailbreaking tool that’s for Windows and Macs.

They say… “Because of some bugs and unexpected changes… …QuickPwn for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime soon”. So we’ll get QuickPwn for Windows and Macs, and hopefully get it soon (tomorrow?), but we just gotta’ wait.

Hey, I bet Apple changed some **** up to try to either prevent the Dev-team from jailbreking OS 3.0, or just try to delay them. The Dev-team’s doin’ a great job, and they’re releasing this stuff to us all for free (not like some jailbroken app developers up on Cydia), so just… be cool… and we’ll get our jailbroken-goodness soon enough.

Peace, J

T-mobile Jailbreakers, Wait For Friday

June18

If your using a jailbroken iPhone on T-mobile, like the Neocell, you need to wait until sometime Friday (tomorrow) until they release the jailbreaking tools for OS 3.0.

Here’s the deal. The old tools will jailbreak 3.0 OS apparently, but it won’t unlock it or some junk. Basicly, if you try to get 3.0 now, you won’t be able to make any calls. Come on now, no one wants that.

So, just wait for the Dev-team to release the tools sometime this Friday when the iPhone 3G S comes out.

Peace, J

OS 3.0 Is Out, Jailbreak Isn’t Yet

June17

So it’s June the 17th and OS 3.0 should be out now. But, the Dev-team (creators of our jailbreak software) haven’t released the jailbreaking tools to us just yet. So, just chill… be cool, and wait for them to release it. Don’t come here looking for an update on when it’s out, go here.

Here’s some really important advice though… make sure you back up any files on your device that belong to or were created with jailbroken applications. Let me give you an example…

For the Neocell, I need to backup video files created with Cycorder. I need to backup the YouTube video files created with Mixtube.

But also make sure that you’ve got all your files backed up through iTunes. The reason why is because, unless something is different, we’re gonna’ need to reformat our iPhones to upgrade to OS 3.0, so the files on our iPhones will be wiped out.

So, make sure your *** is backed up. If your really smart, you’ll wait a few days after they release the jailbreaking tools to see what kinda’ incompatibilities there are with jailbroken apps and the new jailbroken OS 3.0 (but I’m upgrading once it comes out).

Peace, J
