iPhone Tethering 3.1.2 Without Jailbreak How-to

A lot of people want to know how to tether their internet connection using their iPhone without being jailbroken. Well baby, I’m gonna’ hook you up. Well here’s how to do it, and although this is a more complicated way to do it than the walk-through I gave before (iPhone OS 3.1.2 AT&T Tethering Jailbreak How-to ), but this one will work if your in different countries.

How to Activate and Enable Free Internet Tethering on iPhone 3.0

  1. Open Safari
  2. Visit either http://help.benm.at/tethering.php or http://www.iphone-notes.de/mobileconfig/
  3. Select your country
  4. Select your service provider
  5. Tap Install to install the new profile
  6. Select Install Now to install and download the new profile

  7. Now go into your iPhone Settings -> General -> Network -> Internet Tethering (look, internet tethering setting, yeah baby)
  8. Turn Internet Tethering On
  9. When it talks that junk about bluetooth, just tell it USB Only if your connecting your iPhone via cable.

  10. Now that tethering is turned on, just connect your iPhone to your computer and your set (yeah baby)
  11. There’s one last thing to do (something that other web sites seem to leave OUT)… Your iPhone may / will act screwy, so go to Settings -> General -> Reset ->Reset Network Settings. After the short reset, iPhone should be able to be used for MMS, Voicemail and Internet tethering.

And there you have it. Nice ‘n’ easy like Georgia Weezy, am I right?

Update: Tethering does in fact work for OS 3.1.2 jailbroken or unjailbroken, and there’s the proof.

Man Todd, I don't know if I would mess around with tethering unauthorized now. I mean, AT&T now allows tethering. So I assume if you got tethering to work on the old OS 3 version, AT&T may decide to charge you $20 for tethering. If that happens, and your using the old "unlimited data" plan still, they'll bump you to one of the capped plans (the $25 a month 2 GB plan PLUS $20 extra for tetheringt).

IF that were to happen, you may be like "Oh well, got a $20 charge this month for tryin' to do unauthorized tethering. No big deal." but you'll be surprised when you realize AT&T will NOT let you go back to the "unlimited data" plan for $30 a month. That plan doesn't exist anymore and, once you ever move out of it, you can never go back. Never...

I don't find the unlimited plan useful any ways though.

But here's a better question; why are you messin' with OS 3? Why aren't you using iOS 4? If you are using iOS 4 and wondering if this method will work, of course not. It don't even work for OS 3.3.

My advice, if you haven't done so already, is upgrade to iOS 4 and forget about this whole tethering garbage. Yes, you can now do tethering officially, but it costs $20 extra AND it eats into the same pool of data as your regular plan.

    Forget 'bout it.

doesn't work on my non-jailbroken US AT&T 3.1.2. Where is neocell?

What do you mean "whre is neocell"?

I can not get this to work with 3.13. any suggestions?
  • johnbbaird
Yeah, what Keith had said above, OS 3.1.3 DOES break the ability to run your own tethering profile. It won't work if your not jailbroken. Avoid OS 3.1.3 if you want to keep tethering and your not jailbroken.

    Not working on OS 3.1.3.
  • johnbbaird
Sucks John. So far I've tried it with three unjailbroken OS 3.1.3 iPhones and none of them have worked. So far, my recommendation is... if you want to get tethering, avoid OS 3.1.3.

It's totally common knowledge that iPhone OS update 3.1 (and up) broke the ability to perform this hack on stock, locked, non-JB iPhones. I.E. You can't download config profile and can't see network/tethering settings. Many of us had this working on 3.0.
  • johnbbaird
Yeah, sucks, don't it Keith? I wonder how OS 4.0 will be? Hah... no different. It'll be exactly the same. But, if I had to choose between multitasking (OS 4.0) or tethering (OS 3.1.2 or lower), I'd choose multitasking. Hopefully AT&T will ALLOW tethering soon and stop this garbage restrictions. We already pay too much a month for service.

It seems that if you have OS 3.1.3 and aren't jailbroken, the tethering is blocked from downloading via AT&T. That sucks.

@erin Yeah, if it doesn't show for you, it's safe to leave the profile in because it doesn't seem to be affecting anything at all.

@koban Your stuck with a hard choice. Either live without tethering for now, or backup and do a complete reset of all your data and try to being back as much files as possible (not a restore). But know you will lose some app settings and even files. A restore won't help because whatever issues your OS has, a restore will being'em right back.

This seem to be affecting 10% of people or LESS. But the unfortunate way that social media works, when people use this and it works for them, they don't interact or say thanks. They just bounce. The people who do have a problem speak up and say "There's a problem". So this is why your only seein' "it won't work comments".

I've been usin' this method since OS 3.0 and it's worked perfect for my iPhone 3GS, and it's also worked perfect for my girl's iPhone 3G. So if it don't work for you, just gotta' understand it AIN'T an official thing so it's no surprise it's not working for everyone.

Keep soundin' off though, does it work for you, does it not work? What's it doin' and what's it not doin'? Would you all want me to put together a "manual backup and content reset" walk-through (the only possible fix)? Feel free'ta hit me up on Twitter.com/johnBbaird

If downloading the config file does not work, is there a way to create the profile and configuration files yourself?
  • johnbbaird
Good idea, I'm assuming you have a non-jailbroken OS 3.1.3. I had tried to do the tethering and it wouldn't take the download.

The answer's no unfortunately. You'd have to be jailbroken to do something like that (create some kinda' config file if the tethering config doesn't take), and if you were jailbroken the method should work ironically. So na... there's nothin' that can work if this don't work if this method don't work if your non-jailbroken, without jailbreaking (even then, there's no guarantee).

hi, i did all the mentioned above, but when i go to network i don't see tethering option to check, i download the file and rest the network but nothing. please help
  • Erin
Apparently, I'm one of those people that it DOESN'T work for. Too bad. I got excited. Should I remove the US AT&T profile? If I do, does it reinstall the default?

I had answered this already in the comments, but some previous comments aren't displaying because of this brand new comment system. So I'll explain again...

There are some people that tethering just won't work for. Some people have something goofy with their OS (software, not hardware) that won'tallow them to tether. If you've followed the steps above and you neversee the new "Tethering" option, then *your one of those people*. It's not the method, it's not the site, it's not even you... it's your phone! Or more correctly, your current OS.

Someone mentioned in the comments before they used this method on OS 3.1 and it worked fine, but after going to 3.1.2 it didn't work. I had the same issue with 3.1, a similar method wouldn't work for me, but once I updated to 3.1.2, the same method worked. So even I had this "tethering doesn't display as an option" issue before... but now it works. So clearly, it's software.

Why? Because it's an unofficial add-on (hack). It's not always gonna' work for everyone.

A possible solution is to wipe your iPhone clean. I don't mean restore via iTunes, I mean delete all content (including OS) from your phone and then don't "restore", setup your iPhone as a new phone in iTunes and see if that changes things. If you restore, it may bring in a bug or glitch backed up from your old OS. Although I don't recommend this and you *will* lose app settings and data.

Otherwise, wait until a new update comes out (OS 4.0, don't hold your breath) and see if it then works.

I updated the post to show that it does work on OS 3.1.2.

  • This does not work for OS 3.1.2 as the title indicates. Even the sight you visit to get the mobileconfigs states it won't work on OS 3.1.2.
