On April 6th, 2010, I wrote the post, The iPad And The 4th Generation iPhone. I wrote it before iOS 4.0 was announced and before iPhone 4 was announced. What I basically did was speculate what may happen with the 4th generation iPhone, based on was currently happening with the iPad.

“Netflix” Prediction

I predicted:

Why is this on the iPad and not the iPhone?

…

The last reason, and possibly the most realistic reason, that there’s never been an iPhone Netflix app is because Apple’s kept (or discouraged) Netflix from doing one for the iPhone in the past. But with Apple trying to get people to buy the iPad as a way to get media content to this device, they of course allowed, if not encouraged, Netflix to do an app for the iPad. But the good news is that, demand and pressure should make an iPhone version come out at some points (months or even longer)

The result? Yes, during the iOS 4 introduction, a Netflix representative came out on stage and accounced that there would be a Netflix app available for the iPhone. It would run on 3GS and 4 iPhones and would work over both wifi and 3G. The release date wasn’t announced and, to this date, it still hasn’t been released “months or even longer” like, unfortunately, I also predicted.

“iBooks” Prediction

I predicted:

iBooks will be released with the new OS 4.0. Do I know this for a fact? Na… but trust me, it will. It’ll function just like Stanza, but will have the better page turning and will have the ebooks market place. People will flock to the iBooks application to read their books from.

The result? Everything I said came true. iBooks not only comes with the new iPhone 4, but it comes with OS 4.0. It functions just like Stanza, but has better page turning and has a great ebook market place. Most people, including myself, have abandoned all other ebook reader apps in favor for the iBooks app.

“Content” Prediction

I predicted:

I don’t think that content is guaranteed to us (iPhones).

I was unfortunately right, that yes, there isn’t content on iPhones like there is on iPads. The reason? In a nut shell; screen size.

“iPhone Forth Generation Speed” Prediction

I predicted:

Now do I think this new iPhone will have the 1,000 MHz A4 processor? I don’t know. The processor may or may not be optimized for the iPhone battery. In fact, it doesn’t have to be a 1,000 MHz processor to put out that kinda’ power. It could be 800 or 900 MHz. It could perform as fast as the iPad (I assume) because of it’s smaller screen not requiring as much CPU to get the same tasks done.

…

Do I think this new iPhone will have a more powerful processor than the iPad? No, I think that’s more than powerful enough.

The result? I was right on the money. I predicted that Apple would use the A4 processor, I predicted that the A4 processor in an iPhone would perform faster than it does in an iPad and that there would be battery drain issues with the current (3GS) battery if the A4 battery was used. And that’s what happened.

Apple did use the A4 processor in the iPhone 4. The processor does perform faster in the iPhone than iPad. And the iPhone 4 has a much bigger battery to compensate for the faster A4 battery.

“What The iPad Means For The iPhone” Prediction

I predicted:

The iPad’s going to give a lot of new content to the iPhone, just has the iPhone will give do the same for the iPad. It’s like a little ecosystem.

The result? It’s true, the “mindset” of most tech pundits when the iPad first came out was that the “iPhone is old news and the iPad is better and far superior” and that “the iPad will cannibalize the sales of iPhones, their content and their apps”. I was worried that could happen because so many big names were saying it, even though I knew logically it shouldn’t happen. But it didn’t happen.

iPads and iPhones do have a little ecosystem of support. There is no threat from the iPad. In fact, the iPad is a great thing to happen to iPhones.

5 Out Of 5 Predictions True

So I did a pretty **** good job there on my predictions. But when I wrote them, I really wasn’t out to make predictions, I was just out to share some educated observational guesses of mine of how things would turn out. But given my great track record here, I’m gonna’ try to do the same thing next year on the predictions of the fifth generation iPhone.

Will I get my next round of predictions right? Your prediction’s as good as mine.

Peace, JbB

The problem is that the dock was for the Neocell 3GS but not the brand new Neocell 4. iPhone 3G / 3GS docks won’t work for iPhone 4’s because the design of the dock is just different. But iPhone 2G docks WILL work for iPhone 4’s.

So I found one of the Neocell 2G’s old docks and immediately put it to good use.

I did the same thing with the iPhone 2G dock that I did with the iPhone 3G / 3GS dock. I covered all connectors and spray painted it a tan color and also spray painted a protective paint coating on. Here’s the result. (It was raining when the pictures were taken, and these pictures were taken with an iPhone 3G.)

Looks pretty tight, right? But I didn’t stop there. This presented another problem. Before the Neocell 4, the dock could be used for my wife’s iPhone, my mother’s, my best friend’s, etc. When they road with me and wanted to charge their 3G or 3GS iPhone’s, no prob. I’d just take the Neocell 3GS off the dock and drop theirs in.

But now I can’t. Only iPhone 2G’s and iPhone 4’s can work in this dock. And ain’t no one I know has an iPhone 2G, and I’m the only one that has an iPhone 4 (I feel so special, haha) so that means this dock is exclusive to only me.

Man, I don’t want that. I want everyone to be able to dock into the Lexus. I knew people had successfully “modded” iPhone docks to work with other models of iPhones, but the result was HORRIFIC. I mean **** right fugly.

Man, I ain’t puttin some fugly thing into the Lexus.

I’m pretty skilled with a Dremel, so I figured I’d give it a shot. I had a Hong Kong knock off iPhone 3G / 3GS dock that didn’t work, so I decided to see if I could modify it clean enough to pass as a clean, non fugly dock. If I could on this dock, I’d try it on one of my OEM Apple 3G / 3GS iPhone docks. But…

The plastic couldn’t hold up. As you see, it didn’t turn out right. If the very front could stay in tact, this would have worked. I would have coated the “new inside” with it’s own wall-type structure, painted it and that would have worked as it would fit all generations of iPhone.

But it didn’t. The front chipped apart under the stress of having the inner curved parts surgically removed with my Dremel.

So I decided to on something better. I decided to install a second iPhone dock into the Lexus, and this one would be for 3G and 3GS iPhones.

I did the same thing as I did for the iPhone 2G / 4 dock, I masked off all protective areas (including speaker port holes) and painted it black and then sprayed on a protective coating. Check out the pics. (These pics were also taken while raining, but taken with the Neocell 4.)

As you can see, the dock blends in perfectly with the glove box (the little “white” you see on the dock is the reflection of light). The sync cable’s pretty noticeable, but if the white against black keeps annoying me, I’ll order a black sync cable. I’m leaving the cable lose and not hiding or installing it into the interior anywhere so that if someone, such as my wife, wants to use her iPhone while charging it, the cable be unplugged easily (and just as easily, plugged back in).

But that’s not the best feature of them all. Check out the video (recorded with the Neocell 4)…

As you can see, I installed it in such a way that the glove box can actually CLOSE while an iPhone’s sittin’ on the dock charging. I mean, that’s some groovy-*** **** there.

So yeah baby, I’m happy now to have two docks in the Lexus.

Peace, JbB

But it costs $1,000 (will be less of course, about $799). It’s great and all, but you know… you can just use an iPhone dock like I do with your iPhone mounted in touch / visual reach to control whatever it is you wanna’ control. I mean that’s great, don’t get me wrong. Instead of this BS of paying extra for internet access to a radio in your car or something, you can instead use your iPhone like you would normally, feeding off the internet of it to your car’s stereo.

How does this work?

But here’s an important question; does this count as tethering? It shouldn’t. I mean, after all, this is just an API for controlling the iPhone’s Pandora. I mean, it would be tethering if Pandora didn’t run on your iPhone and a car stereo simply used the internet access to feed it’s own Pandora function. But apparently it’s not, it’s just using iOS 4 API’s to feed information from Pandora playing on your iPhone.

It’s like this. Pandora plays on your iPhone and the audio output is already feed through the special car dock connector, and the car is also feed the title information, as well as other interface information, such as artwork, genre, rating, navigation, etc. (Just like systems that can access and control your iPod app, that system really isn’t running it’s own iPod system, it’s simply accessing information off of the iPhone running the iPod.)

It’s fascinating technology though. It shows the explosive power of both iPhones and Pandora. But would I use it? Well ****, if I were offered it for free, heck yeah I would! But that’s a lotta’ money.

Stereo Interface VS. Dock Interface

Basically, let’s break it down to what it really does when compared to current setups. It offers you an interface to control your iPhone to have your iPod music collection play or have Pandora play. But using an iPhone dock (or mount even) right near your stereo gives you the same functionality.

VS.

In both setups, you have to physically connect your iPhone.

In both setups, your iPhone charges.

In both setups, you can run GPS navigation with Pandora running.

In both setups, you have easy connecting / disconnecting of iPhone.

Only in dock setup can you control every aspect of your iPhone.

And that’s it right there. I mean, having an iPhone dock setup, you can control every part of your iPhone. Wanna’ run something other than Pandora or iPod? You can. If a text message comes up or a notification about a item on eBay pops up, you can see it because your keeping your iPhone out front and center as your “interface” into your media (and GPS navigation, as I’m doing currently).

This stereo is an absolutely great idea, but I’d still want my iPhone to be out front and center like it is currently. I mean, controlling **** like Pandora through the interface of your stereo’s amazing, but you still need your iPhone out front and center at times. For instance, what happens if your music stops all of the sudden? Is it because Pandora froze or because you don’t have cell reception? You gotta’ bring your iPhone out and look at it.

So I’d totally love to have a car stereo system interface like this with the Neocell, but the problem is that I’d want it setup the way it currently is and, in fact, I’d want to control everything from my iPhone itself. It’s just that easy. Got the GPS navigation app open and need to pause Pandora? Double click on the home button, swipe right and tap pause. Receive a phone call and simply pick it up from the dock one-handed to take the call (unlike cables that connect into your iPhone) and start talkin’. Once done, redock, double click home button, swipe left and tap “play”.

There is the convent issue that this stereo has bluetooth hands free calling, but you can simply get that with a lot of stereos on the market now for a LOT less than this stereo.

It’s kinda’ frustrating because this seems like such an awesome product for someone like me, but I can easily see myself not using it’s interface and instead using my iPhone because of so many reasons.

Somebody improve the dock experience

Instead of an interface to control your iPhone, I’d like to see an improvement to the Apple dock. I’d love to see a device that functions just like the current dock does, but has the unique ability to rotate into landscape view all while keeping your iPhone firmly in place, providing power and audio ports (not a built-in wire, but ports like the current dock), low profile like the current dock and most important, a simple “dock” method of connecting and not some stupid snap on bull ****.

Conclusion

This stereo will be great for a lotta’ people, but for me, I’m gonna’ continue building systems around my iPhone being the interface of my system and not the other way around.

Peace, JbB

Oh yeah baby. Check it. I’ve sold the Neocell 3GS and I’ve ordered an iPhone 4 32GB from AT&T. I ordered it yesterday, 08/25/2010 and according to FedEX, it’ll be delivered tomorrow, 08/27/2010! Wow, that is some fast *** delivery.

I had to order it online from AT&T instead of heading down to pick one up because all places are sold out of iPhone 4 32GB in Tampa, FL. Months after the iPhone 4 debuted, it’s still in such high demand that they’re still are on backorder. The Apple Store here in Tampa gets iPhone 4’s in almost every day, but not many 32GBs and you have to stand in line for over an hour. An Apple store employee told me wait times have been about two to three hours, and you have to come in first thing in the morning. I ain’t standin’ in line at 8 or 9 in the morning every day and wait to see if there’s even any 32GB iPhones.

I avoided ordering from apple.com or from the Apple store because I’ve read report after report of people ordering from Apple and having it take two to three weeks to ship, where AT&T only takes 4 to 5 business days on average. In my case, it may only be 3 days!

So I’m crazy excited about getting an iPhone 4, but it won’t instantly become the “Neocell 4″. Just like when I designed the Neocell 2G and Neocell 3GS, this will just be an iPhone 4 until I customize it with 24K gold, baby.

I’ve been working on the design. I’ve been trying to incorporate wood into the design like I did with the Neocell 2G and Neocell 3GS. This time I want the chrome Apple logo to show like it did with the Neocell 2G’s design. With the current design I’m planning, I don’t have any options for wood plating. I really want gold plating, but the new design of the iPhone 4 changes things.

So here’s what the current design is set to look like. With the image, I’ve created it so that it looks like gold plating with white vinyl text (“Neocell 4″) and have an Invisible Shield over it all (which I rendered the look into the image). I’m going with a dragon design that encompasses the chrome Apple logo. I chose to order a black iPhone so that it would have a good contrast with the gold.

Something new I’ll be adding will be vinyl text that says “Neocell 4″. I think this’ll be a great addiction because this design isn’t really as noticeable compared to the other two designs, and with the lack of wood, this vinyl text will really make “The Neocell” look all that much more professional and unique. Normally, the vinyl text would get messed up and would fall apart within a few days or weeks, but because the Invisible Shield will already be on there to protect the 24K gold, it’ll also protect the vinyl.

The one problem is with the top part of the gold design blocking the LED flash of the camera. So I plan to modify the gold so that, as you can see in the image, the LED flash will be right neatly aligned to the gold design but completely unblocked.

It’ll take a few weeks to get the design done. Once I get the gold plating installed, it’ll officially become the “Neocell 4″ and I’ll post images. I can’t wait.

Peace, JbB

So for those of you that remember, last year I sold the Neocell 2G on eBay. Well now I’m selling the Neocell 3GS on eBay starting today. The auction should end Sunday, August 22nd. There’s no reserve!

Why’em I sellin’ the Neocell 3GS? Because I’m getting a new AT&T account (I’ll explain later) and, with it, an iPhone 4.

It should be interesting to see the outcome of this auction, considering the results of the last auction. I’d love it if the Neocell 3GS went to one of my readers like the Neocell 2G.

The Neocell 3GS is still rockin’ it and lookin’ sexy as ever. In fact, it’s much better than what it was before.

I removed the wood and gold plating from the front. The gold and wood plating on the front was perfect. But I had to keep it protected, so I used an Invisible Shield on the front. The Invisible Shield caused a problem, because of the “levels” between the gold to wood to glass caused there to be bubbles in the Invisible Shield. That caused cleaning problems and caused problems with the smooth “feel” of the iPhone. So I took it off and realized it was much better plain on the front.

The back gold and wood plating was great, but the Invisible Shield on the sides annoyed me. So I made a custom shaped Invisible Shield for that back that only covered the back plating perfectly, so that the sides still feel nice ‘n’ smooth.

I don’t have a design plan for an iPhone 4 yet. Not really sure what I’d do. I’m gonna’ continue with the whole “gold” theme. Just like with the Neocell 3GS, I’ll get the iPhone 4 and then decide on what to do with the design.

I’ll keep ya updated on how things go.

Peace, JbB

I’m chillin’ here in bed tonight, goin’ over some news on the Neocell before I fall asleep. I go to load up a news story, and once I load the page up, I notice I can’t navigate the page because something’s floating above the page blocking me. What is it? It’s a form of web pop-up made just for iPhones.

As you can see in the images below, it’s not an actual third party advertisement. It’s actually an ad to try and put a bull **** icon onto my precious home screen for the crappy eweek.com web site. (eweek.com is one of the worst new sites.) You can see from the pics that the “pop-up” positions itself perfectly in both orientations.

I could easily hit the little “x” button to close it out and continue reading the article in peace, but **** that. I instead took screen shots of it (for the purpose of this post) and then closed it out.

Why? Because I do not respond well to web sites that use allowing pop-ups, and I also don’t respond well to web sites that pull bull **** like this. If *I* want to chose to bookmark a web site, *I’ll* do it. I don’t need a web site suggesting it to me. And certainly not putting a crappy web icon on my precious home screen.

As web sites become more and more interactive, polished and catering to iPhones, you’ll also have some web sites that go in the opposite direction, such as eweek.com.

Peace, JbB

I found out something pretty tight today. I found out that you use the Voice Memos app to record audio in the background. That’s pretty ‘freakin’ tight. Here’s why.

Say that your sitting somewhere, talking about something important with someone, such as getting a refund on something or recording the audio of someone who had just caused you to have a car accident, it’s a smart idea to record the audio. But if your like me, you gotta’ use your iPhone for all sorts’a crap, such as jotting down notes or using the calculator or checking a web page. The great thing is that you can still record audio while doin’ different things.

Now my girl tells me this isn’t new, that she’s been doin’ it on her iPhone 3G even before OS 4. But it’s new to me.

So my advice, if your ever in a situation where recording someone’s audio is important, such as someone giving you a “spoken promise”, record that sucker’s audio.

If you read my post a month ago (New ATT Data Plans, What You Need To Know), I talked about the future of mobile Internet use for iPhone users. I recommended people switch to the 2 GB plan a month, saving $5 off their phone bill. I talked about my usage and where I suspected it would be once iOS 4.0 and its multitasking came out.

Well iOS 4.0 has been out for a while now, and Pandora’s been updated or multitasking. So now I have a better understanding of what my monthly usage is.

As you can see from the image below, I’m more than halfway through my billing cycle and I’ve used 493 MBs.

So how have I been using my mobile Internet plan so far this month? Well before I wasn’t able to run Pandora while driving because I had to use the Neocell as my GPS navigation (Got My Car Docked (iPhone Dock That Is)), and we all know Pandora couldn’t run in the background before iOS 4.0 (not counting Backgrounder). But now that Pandora can run in the background, I’ve been running Pandora behind Navigon when I drive. And I’ve ran Pandora a few times on the mobile Internet when hangin’ with friends via the Minimove (iPhone Remote Controllers Can Control Pandora), and a bit when goin’ shopping, using headphones or whatever. So I’d say I’ve used Pandora over my mobile Internet about 10 – 20 hours this month. (I know next month it’ll be more, because Navigon and Pandora were glitching a few times when Pandora’s update first came out and I wasn’t running Pandora at time.)

Other uses for the mobile internet has been emailing maybe 5 or 6 30 second videos, emailing maybe 20 pictures, downloading maybe 15 pictures via email, sending and receiving maybe 50 text emails, publishing three posts via Wordpress, maybe 4 hours of web surfing and maybe 2 hours of web apps, such as eBay, Twitter, etc.

That’s a lot of use for only half a month. And thankfully, I’ve only used 1/4 of my Internet usage. But that doesn’t account for the total Internet usage on the Neocell in the past 15 days or so. Whenever I’m able to get on wifi, such as at home, I do it. So about 80% of my time using the Internet on the Neocell is done over wifi.

So don’t think to yourself “Wow, he uses his iPhone a lot and only uses that much of his mobile Internet? Then I’m good…” if you don’t connect (or have) wifi at your home or work.

Check out the second image below, the one that shows the usage of all data coming into and out of the Neocell. This is since I upgraded to iOS 4.0, so since my billing period started, the actual usage is pretty close (it would be just a little higher). I’ve used over the 2 GB limit. Now I’m good because 80% of that **** was over wifi. But if you aren’t using wifi and you use your iPhone a LOT, be careful. You could o over the limit.

But, I’m pleasantly surprised that things like Pandora and emailing don’t suck as much data as I thought. As long as people have wifi to connect to every now and then, I don’t see anyone really going over the 2 GB limit. (Tether is a completely different, sad story though).

Oh yeah, if you haven’t gotten it yet, go out and get the AT&T myWirelesa app to monitor your data usage.

Peace, JbB
